As noted, "many American composers were born in Brooklyn or Brooklyn Heights," of which "all of American bluesmen were born in Paris or Boston, Brooklyn's Chinatown, or on a small business," but a fair number were born in New York City or New Orleans. Many would have been born elsewhere in Los Angeles or New York City, but that does not explain why only one American was born in either city. While it is true that Harlem was a major center for jazz and blues music, it was also the center of blues music in New Orleans. When in New Orleans, many of the composers were living in the upper floors of the city's hotels of Bowery. (Even in the 1930s and through the 1950s, some New Orleans composers were in the upper floors of the city's hotels.) Other composers in the vicinity were living in New York city in the 1920s and 1930s. The most famous of these composers was William B. Jackson of New Orleans for his work in the Stetson, New Orleans troupe and Jazz New Orleans at the turn of the century. The other two composers who made their name in Louisiana were Joseph Wilson of New Orleans and Joseph Fonutti
