The comments come as Russian journalists were allegedly hit with an escalating wave of attacks against journalists in the Ukraine region in recent days. A Russian news service with ties to President Vladimir Putin wrote that Russian government personnel are carrying out heavy attacks in Ukraine against journalists.
Ukraine's government blamed the attacks on "foreign actors" and called for Russian President Vladimir Putin's removal from office.
"This situation is reminiscent of those at the beginning of last year when the main opposition against Mr. Putin was the Russian-Ukrainian separatists," Foreign Ministry spokesman Vitaly Mutko told a news briefing. "The Russian government is now looking for an end to the conflict in Crimea in order to resolve the political situation in Ukraine."
According to the National Defense Council (NDC), three of its members have been killed in the recent attacks.
In February, the US House passed legislation to ban the head of a foreign policy think tank from serving as a lawmaker in Russian society unless his or her services have become publicly known.
The NDC also accused the president of a new policy of "spontaneous and indiscriminate" attacks on journalists while the head of a state-owned and state-controlled company said he would face a barrage of emails and calls from the media.
