NEW YORK — A retired NYPD officer says his life may be on the line after the NYPD's chief announced officers may no longer be able to wear the burkini, or the burrow masks, worn by cops who are sworn to protect and serve.
Michael K. Ritter of Brooklyn, 27, and his partner, Officer Mike Schofield, 52, were asked to remove burlap bags and burlap headbands and to carry some of their clothing inside the police precinct of the Queens borough to the Police Department Headquarters at 566 Eighth Street on Thursday by Chief Michael K. Ritter, who said the decision was made for "safety and security," "in response to ongoing investigations" in an email to the New York Daily News.
Ritter's decision sparked what he said was "a significant reaction" from other police officers, which is why he was among them.
"What it has to do with all this is it has to do with my family's safety, my relationship with it, and my friends," Ritter said. "Being a father is not about that. If my children are going to school tomorrow, let them do whatever they want to do. If they're going to go to a dance or something, go ahead and do whatever they want."
