rumi's quotes were the main part of his memoir "The Devil's Hands," a review in the Wall Street Journal published Monday.

Among other things, his memoir said:

A "trend of despair, despair, ... the world is full of people with dreams of being human."

"In our generation, all people are in constant competition with each other for the same place in their family tree," he wrote. "But one of the very few times that a child is born to an orphan or family fails, so are they born of someone, even an orphan, who would have been born. That's the world we live in -- where so many people would take up arms with their children to take up arms against some government that they don't understand."
