A spokesperson for the NSW Health and Safety Authority said that the study, which was conducted by the NSW Health and Safety Commission, had a sample size of 1,000 people over a 30-year period.
"The population included and was considered at the baseline of the current survey, as individuals ages 18 to 34 are likely to experience some degree of alcohol or drugs abuse, despite the fact that there is not one or two studies that show a significant relationship between lifetime alcohol use and the risk of serious health problems associated with drinking," Dr Rob Stroud, Medical Lead at a NSW Health and Safety Authority study.
"In the sample the rate of alcohol abuse was significantly lower among those aged 18 to 35 than those aged 75 to 84, at a median of 18 days a year (mean, 16.7 +/- 4.1 days), suggesting an alcohol abuse-related vulnerability."
