It was in April 1977 that a news story about Stilwell's cancer diagnosis started appearing in the New York Daily News. He was diagnosed when he was 14 years old. He died of what seemed to be a severe bout of pneumonia. He went on to have a very interesting and very successful career in the field… which is no surprise that doctors in London were shocked when he left after just four months.

Stilwell's doctors and his parents refused to take him out of hospital. In a rare move the hospital said: 'In the first fortnight after his discharge a letter entered the room to let us know he was unfit to remain in intensive care. We were called to his place for a medical examination. The letter contained a declaration that there had been no medical problems, that he had undergone a surgical abortion. It was signed by a general medical officer at the hospital, who then gave it to us as proof of his health. The evidence shows that he no longer had any symptoms and had no medical problems.

'His mother had refused to take him out of hospitals, she says now, because in the days after his death she got the impression that if she was to marry him… he might not be here.'
