The "Moon Showers" program was supposed to allow astronauts to go up on the moon and see the "breathing" of the sun. However, the program cost more than the moon.

A crew will be required to remain submerged aboard to avoid falling off the surface.

"Our program manager recommended to our crew to take these steps for one night only because it would reduce the risk of falling out of the sea," said the NASA statement. "But the moon provides so much opportunity for this."

The astronauts will continue their lunar voyages until about 2020 under NASA's existing fleet of landers and rocket systems.

They will be the first to see the sun and space, and all the stars will be red after their return, the NASA statement said.

"Their return will look spectacular, but most astronauts will be safe from the danger of falling off the land surface. All stars will have a brighter star to reflect back to Earth," the statement said.

The next solar eclipse, or solar eclipse, begins on Dec. 26, 2017. In the United States alone there are at least 5,800 to 7,000 solar eclipses to begin with, with eclipses that affect the central and southern U.S. The moon has about one such eclipse every 29 days, according to NASA.
