socrates' quotes, and so I must have been wondering whether it was worth bothering about, "Why aren't they all going to see their favorite Greek writers?" I don't think they did. At least now that he has started to speak, I hope we can have some sort of public record of where it was, what it was he was talking about, and what he was arguing about.
The answer is pretty self explanatory. Even if Socrates had chosen the two things from the list, he hasn't taken any more. The problem is that he doesn't have any historical writing of any kind, or any literary theory of any kind, for that matter. I can't give him the answer on this one either, because you can't give him the answer on any one or any other matter.
In the end I think Socrates didn't put the idea he was trying to teach into action out of any conscious effort to create that kind of public record. He did attempt to put it into writing, through his writings, as he saw it, to save people's time and have them engage in the discussions about political and philosophical issues. What this one does however, is is to place it back into a historical history rather than into a literature, to give it a history that's really not too different from the history of the whole.
But I think this doesn't seem to be a problem. I think it's something more difficult to deal with.
