For those who are unfamiliar with the Internet, it is, as David Ignatius once put it, a "death trap." As early as 1979, for instance, while I was at Princeton, I was trying to gain information on the Internet that would go on to shape the U.S. political and cultural life. I discovered it from a paper written by the economist Michael D. W. Rocha that he had just published in the journal, American Political Science Review, at the time. The research that Rocha wrote had already been in print and the papers that he had written involved two different models: one of one by Ignatius, and one by the economist Paul Krugman.
The paper had a few limitations of its day that you might expect from an economist. Ignatius himself was well known for his research in the 1980s on the causes and consequences of economic shocks. The economists called them "consequences," and in the paper, which followed their research, they described some of our world-wide consequences. These included a number of new economic shocks and even the prospect of more of them.
